Bothy refurbishment – week 1

There are several big projects on at Torrdarach House this winter. The first of these is the refurb of the original bothy behind the main house. Hopefully this derelict outbuilding will end up being a rather nice addition to our guest rooms. The old car port is to be removed and the final en-suite bedroom will have an enclosed private courtyard.

As you can see there is quite a lot to be done!  Major damp issues requiring a full tanking system and the replacement of rotten roof timbers are the first jobs to be tackled.

Work started at the end of last week and we hope it will be completed by the end of January. We will post updates on progress throughout the winter.

Pitlochry Dam gates open

Heavy rain over the last 48 hours in Pitlochry and Highland Perthshire meant the Pitlochry Hydro Power Station had to fully open the dam gates today.  What a noise!

Pitlochry log mountain!

Yesterday we took delivery of 4 cubic metres of hardwood logs from Gatehouse Nursery near Pitlochry.  It turns out 4 cubic metres is more than I anticipated!

These are all hardwood logs sourced from woodland around Highland Perthshire. This pile should keep us warm for quite a while.

I hope you are impressed with my log stacking skills.

Pitlochry – “one of Scotland’s best adventure towns”

Scotland Outdoors is one of our favourite outdoors and adventure magazines.  The Autumn/Winter 2011 edition has done an extensive feature on Scotland’s top 5 adventure towns and has named Pitlochry amongst them. Quite right too!

The short article mentions walking, mountian biking, road cycling, bungee jumping, skiing and boarding, rafting and kayaking.  There are also references to other attractions around Pitlochry including Blair Castle, Pitlochry Festival Theatre, Enchanted Forest, Winter Words Festival, New Year’s Day street party, Ben Vrackie, River Tummel, Loch Faskally and the fish ladder and Killiecrankie.  All in all, pretty good coverage.

See the feature on Pitlochry below.

Things to do around Pitlochry – Scottish Field, December 2011

The Scottish Field magazine, December 2011, has suggested ten things to do in Perthshire, many of which are very close to Torrdarach House in Pitlochry.  All of the suggestions get a thumbs-up from us.

Most of the suggestions above are very close to our Bed and Breakfast in Pitlochry, Highland Perthshire.

Art around Pitlochry

We have over 50 original paintings around Torrdarach House.  These have been collected over many years and mainly from galleries across Scotland.  Artists on our walls include, Douglas Phillips, Audrey Slorance, James Fullarton, Jennifer Mackenzie, John Lowrie Morrison, Roseanne Barr, Dronma and Elinor Evans.

Jennifer Mackenzie is probably our favourite artist and we have about 12 of her paintings around the house – we are big fans!  See a couple of examples below.

We are often asked which galleries we have bought from and the answer is many.  However, we have probably bought more from the Aberfeldy Gallery than any other individual gallery.  Not far from Pitlochry, the Aberfeldy Gallery has, in our opinion, one of the best collections of paintings for sale in Perthshire.  Here is the Christmas 2011 exhibition brochure.

Our Pitlochry B&B in 1913

We have been lucky enough to be given two postcards of Torrdarach House, our Pitlochry B&B, from 1913.  As you can see, one of the photos shows the house in the summer and the other shows the infamous Pitlochry snowfall of January 1913.  You need strong gutters to hold that amount of snow!

The winter photo shows the original owner, a rather grumpy looking Mr Briggs, standing in the deep snow in the drive.  Mr Briggs was a wealthy industrialist who manufactured asphalt in Dundee. Torrdarach House was his holiday home…nice.  If you look closely you may notice that the gate posts have been moved from their original position up by the house, about 30m down the hill towards Pitlochry to their current position.
