The Bothy is finished! – April 2012

Our new guest bedroom for 2012 is The Bothy. A Victorian outbuilding behind the main house has been converted into an en-suite bedroom.

The room is bright and airy with two windows and a vaulted ceiling. King-sized Sealy bed, two leather armchairs and a 22 inch Toshiba LCD TV with integrated DVD player.

The Bothy is only a few yards from the front door of the main house for easy access to the guest lounge and breakfast room. There is also a private courtyard with teak table and chairs.

A few photos below:

You can see what The Bothy looked like during the refurb on our previous blog posts. I hope you agree we have improved it!

Pitlochry bothy refurb – week 4, Dec 2011

Some good progress was made in the week before Christmas.  Despite quite a lot of snowfall the temperature warmed up considerably and the new concrete floor and tanking system has dried out nicely.  The joiner has now started work on framing out the interior including a structural stud wall to give additional support to the roof.  The leadwork has also been completed under the coping stones at the top of the roof and the weatherproof, breathable paper has been laid on the roof.  A few hundred slates, a door and some windows and we will be watertight! Next update will be mid January 2012.

Pitlochry bothy refurb – week 3, Dec 2011

Pitlochry was hit by hurricane speed winds last week. Well over 100mph and most of it seemed to be directed at the Torrdarach House trees.  The garden took a fairly serious pummeling (see other post) but the house and, incredibly, the crumbling bothy remained unscathed.  Hurray!  When power was restored to Pitlochry (after about 36 hours) progress on the bothy was swift.  The tanking system, designed to prevent water ingress from the high ground level behind the bothy, was installed and the insulated, reinforced concrete floor went in.  Given the recent Pitlochry weather and low temperatures this is great news.  Next job – the roof!  Will update again before Christmas.

Pitlochry bothy refurb – week 2

Loads of rain in Pitlochry last week, followed by low temperatures and snow has made for some nice early morning Pitlochry photos, but has resulted in all work on the bothy coming to a halt.  Not a good first week!

Bothy refurbishment – week 1

There are several big projects on at Torrdarach House this winter. The first of these is the refurb of the original bothy behind the main house. Hopefully this derelict outbuilding will end up being a rather nice addition to our guest rooms. The old car port is to be removed and the final en-suite bedroom will have an enclosed private courtyard.

As you can see there is quite a lot to be done!  Major damp issues requiring a full tanking system and the replacement of rotten roof timbers are the first jobs to be tackled.

Work started at the end of last week and we hope it will be completed by the end of January. We will post updates on progress throughout the winter.
