Treats Cafe – restaurant, gift and craft shop in Kinloch Rannoch

Treats cafe in Kinloch Rannoch

One of the best drives in Highland Perthshire has to be the loop from Pitlochry down Loch Tummel and the Queen’s View, to Kinloch Rannoch, around Loch Rannoch, past the remote Rannoch Station and Schiehallion, up and over to Aberfeldy and eventually back to Pitlochry. It is a stunning drive with super loch and mountain views, loads of wildlife and numerous well mapped walks. This loop is roughly the same route as the tremendously popular Etape Caledonia road cycle race held annually in Highland Perthshire.

If you do take our advice and check out this stunning part of Highland Perthshire we would definitely recommend a stop at Treats Cafe in Kinloch Rannoch. This is a great spot for lunch (try the stovies) and a favourite hot chocolate stop for us. Treats cafe and restaurant are complimented nicely by their smart gift shop with loads of local crafts, cards and a small art gallery. All in all a very pleasant spot indeed. Did I say to try the stovies……?

Blair Atholl Watermill – working mill and tea room

Blair Atholl Watermill and tea room

A lovely working watermill in Blair Atholl just a few miles up the road from Pitlochry.

This is one of the last working watermills in Scotland and if you are lucky you will see the mill in action.

Various flours and oatmeals are available to buy and they also use their own products in the bakery and the excellent tea room. Great sandwiches, soups and cakes. A great spot for lunch.

Loch Faskally and the Pitlochry Boating Station

The pontoon at the Boating Station Cafe on Loch Faskally

Loch Faskally was created in the 50′s by the damming of the River Tummel for the hydro-electric network. It is a lovely little loch and has some great short paths around the shores.

One of our favourite spots on the loch is the Pitlochry Boating Station. Here you can hire a wee boat and fishing tackle and try your hand with a rod, or just take out one of the rowing boats for a pootle about the loch. The Boating Station Cafe is also an excellent spot for lunch or just a cup of tea and a cream-cake. Great food and excellent value.

There are a number of walks that start from the Boating Station including a riverside walk a few kilometers up river to Killiecrankie and a shorter walk to an all abilities path at Loch Dunmore. Loch Dunmore is a stunning little spot and plays host to The Enchanted Forest during October.

The Watermill Cafe and Bookshop, Aberfeldy

cafe at the Watermill

A trip to Aberfledy is not complete without a visit to the Aberfeldy Watermill. This excellent cafe, art gallery and bookshop is housed in an old watermill in the centre of Aberfeldy.

Excellent soup and sandwiches are on offer, but I am a big fan of the coffee and cakes. The bookshop is extensive and has the largest range of titles in the Scottish Highlands. There are regular exhibitions in the art gallery upstairs and next door, the owners have opened Homer, a rather nice homewares shop. All well worth a visit.

Find out more at http://www.aberfeldywatermill.com/

Aberfeldy is about a 20 minute drive from Pitlochry.

Edradour Distillery, Pitlochry

The sign at Edradour Distillery

Here in Pitlochry we have the smallest distillery in Scotland. The Edradour distillery is housed in a collection of old whitewashed farm buildings set in an idyllic Highland Perthshire glen.

Using the smallest stills allowed by law, the three distillers of Edradour produce only 12 casks of whisky per week. All by hand! Its a cracking malt – ‘smooth and creamy with a nutty, honeyed finish’. Here at Torrdarach we always have a bottle on the shelf.

The distillery offers a very interesting tour from 10am-4pm throughout the summer season. Well worth a visit. Check out their website – Edradour Distillery

From the car park at Edradour you can make the short walk through an oak woodland to The Black Spout waterfall. One of the of the highest waterfalls around Highland Perthshire and easily accessible. Great views across the fields to Ben Vrackie from the walk in. Not to be missed on a visit to Edradour.

House of Bruar

This self-styled ‘home of country clothing’ is often referred to as the ‘Harrods of the North’. If you want an over-the-top retail experience during your stay in Pitlochry, The House of Bruar should definitely be on your list of things to do. Huge country clothing halls, an art gallery, a homewares shop, large restaurant and an excellent deli and butchery.

Check out their website http://www.houseofbruar.com/ and have a look at some of our own photos below.

The House of Bruar is just 10 miles north of Pitlochry and a visit, combined with a tour of Blair Castle and a walk up the Falls of Bruar, makes for an excellent day out.
